“For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8:38-39
In the many words I’ve written over the years, I have never had the capacity to fully describe how deeply God’s love reaches and touches me. Sometimes, it’s hard to convey the richness of this message to others. I do my best, but feel that it is simply something that has to be experienced, although I am fully aware of how undeserving I am of that much love. If a person has been touched by the love of our good and faithful Father, it is easier to identify with His endless love. It took me many years to get to that place, and I am eternally thankful to know that I am unconditionally loved in spite of myself! God’s arm of love and forgiveness is long and always there.
Today, I’ve been thinking of the timeless old hymn shown below. I’ve always loved hearing it sung. Perhaps the third verse of “The Love of God” describes how I feel as a novice writer. There could never be enough ink produced, paper made, or pens available to be able to write the love of God. Rich. Pure. Measureless. Strong. The songwriter did his best, too, and to his words, I say, “Amen.” What hope we have, wrapped in God’s never-ending love.
The Love of God
Frederick M. Lehman, 1917
The love of God is greater far
Than tongue or pen can ever tell;
It goes beyond the highest star,
And reaches to the lowest hell;
The guilty pair, bowed down with care,
God gave His Son to win;
His erring child He reconciled,
And pardoned from his sin.
Refrain: Oh, love of God, how rich and pure!
How measureless and strong!
It shall forevermore endure—
The saints’ and angels’ song.
When hoary time shall pass away,
And earthly thrones and kingdoms fall;
When men who here refuse to pray,
On rocks and hills and mountains call;
God’s love, so sure, shall still endure,
All measureless and strong;
Redeeming grace to Adam’s race—
The saints’ and angels’ song.
Refrain:
Oh, love of God, how rich and pure!
How measureless and strong!
It shall forevermore endure—
The saints’ and angels’ song.
Could we with ink the ocean fill,
And were the skies of parchment made,
Were every stalk on earth a quill,
And every man a scribe by trade;
To write the love of God above
Would drain the ocean dry;
Nor could the scroll contain the whole,
Though stretched from sky to sky.
Refrain:
Oh, love of God, how rich and pure!
How measureless and strong!
It shall forevermore endure—
The saints’ and angels’ song.
