“And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.” I John 2:17
One Sunday morning, while at church, I was noticing how some of our congregants have gotten old right before my eyes. Those who are now middle-aged couples were once young adults starting out, having babies, living their lives, and reaching for their dreams. Their babies are now grown, many have married and now have children of their own. Seems like only yesterday, but I fully realize that in the 40+ years I’ve attended my church, I have also gotten old right along with these younger folks. And, I’m very thankful for the privilege of having done so.
Today, in thinking back on these young families, I’m reminded that our days here on earth are moving very quickly. The words of the old hymn below tell us that we truly are “just a-passing through.” The good news is that while we are here, in spite of hurried days and challenging times, we have a sure and mighty Anchor to hold onto, and One who will always steady us. We have One who never changes and is perfect in every way; One who will lead us through this journey of ups and downs and all of the “in-betweens” of life.
Jesus is as near as the mention of His name. If you aren’t depending on Him for your strength today, why not read the Book of John. Get to know who He is. You will see how much He loves you. He died for you. Even though we are all a work in progress, God is very patient with us, for which I’m eternally thankful. He takes us right where we are and begins His work in us—shaping and molding and shaping and molding some more, until He begins to see His image shining in our reflection.
Friends, there’s a better day coming and I pray that you’ll remember where you are now is not your final destination. Without a doubt, as our days sail by so quickly, we will experience the peace of God in our hearts through each of our anxious and uncertain moments. We have the option of making each new day one in which we don’t focus on the bad stuff, rather we view our present difficulties in light of eternity.
May you find the Anchor for your soul and walk through today with peace in your heart and a song on your lips. You have this day. It will never come again. As with yesterday and all days before, let us always remember that God is good, all the time.
This World Is Not My Home
This world is not my home, I’m just a-passing through,
My treasures are laid up somewhere beyond the blue;
The angels beckon me from heaven’s open door,
And I can’t feel at home in this world anymore.
Refrain:
O Lord, You know I have no friend like You,
If heaven’s not my home, then, Lord, what will I do?
The angels beckon me from heaven’s open door,
And I can’t feel at home in this world anymore.
They’re all expecting me, and that’s one thing I know—
My Savior pardoned me, and now I onward go;
I know He’ll take me through though I am weak and poor,
And I can’t feel at home in this world anymore.
Just up in glory-land we’ll live eternally,
The saints on every hand are shouting victory,
Their songs of sweetest praise drift back from heaven’s shore,
And I can’t feel at home in this world anymore.
Refrain:
O Lord, You know I have no friend like You,
If heaven’s not my home, then, Lord, what will I do?
The angels beckon me from heaven’s open door,
And I can’t feel at home in this world anymore.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, We thank You for another opportunity to love and serve You. Please lead us in such a way that we will always represent You well. As time passes so quickly, we are comforted to know that this world and all of its troubles, is not our home nor is it our final destination. It is through our faith in Jesus Christ, that we find the peace that passes all understanding. Thank You for loving us and caring for us. I pray these things in Jesus name. Amen.
