“The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever.” Isaiah 40:8 ESV
My husband and I live in the city and have a small backyard. Over the years, we have had a few harsh winters, and much of the grass has died. Consequently, our backyard hasn’t looked or felt inviting for outdoor enjoyment for a long time. This spring seemed the perfect time to spruce up our outdoor space, so we got busy.
The first step of our backyard renewal was to pressure wash the patio. Then, we ordered a small outdoor furniture set, added some new grass, and hung decorative lights along the fence. Thankfully, this space’s transformation is complete. We will no doubt enjoy many relaxing times outside with family and friends. I also hope to read, write, and pray in the stillness of this updated space as I listen to the doves softly cooing and the birds singing their melodious songs of joy.
The Scripture above tells us that “the grass withers, the flower fades.” When that happens, we know they will die. So will we and all the “things” we are trying to hold onto in this life. Nothing on earth is eternal, for God has created a life cycle for everything. However, we can be encouraged by the last part of Isaiah 40:8…”but the word of our God will stand forever.” The eternal nature of God’s Word is a source of comfort, knowing that it is the infallible and inerrant guidebook to a life filled with hope and assurance; that there is more to life than what we now see and experience; and that His Word will never wither or fade.
Our encouragement comes from knowing that through Jesus Christ, God will transform us more and more into His image. By reading, studying, and applying His Word to our lives, we can abide in Him and live a life that is pleasing to Him.
Yes, our backyard looks a bit nicer, but nothing lasts forever except God and His Word. He has given us His Son, Jesus Christ, so we might have the eternal hope of glory when we leave this imperfect world. This hope will always provide comfort and security. His Word tells us how to have that which will never fade, wither, or die. I am thankful that His message will never be outdated or irrelevant to those who call Jesus Christ their Savior and Lord.
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, how we love You and Your Word. When we need guidance, Your Word lights our path, showing us the way to go. When we need comfort, Your Word is a lamp unto our feet and gives us peace, unlike anything this world can offer. Your Word assures us that we are never alone and will always have Someone who will guide us through this life until we get to the other side in glory. Thank You for Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who rescued us from sin and promised eternal life in Heaven when we leave this world. We love and praise You for the many blessings You continue to bestow upon us. I pray this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
